Underground nuclear testing on Novaya Zemlya: the physical background

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

This paper describes the location of the sites of 42 underground nuclear tests conducted on Novaya Zemlya over the period from 1964 to 1990. The geology and climate of the islands and specific test sites are examined and possible implications for test site maintenance and environmental quality are revealed. The question of the relationship between the venting of explosion by products from underground testing and bedrock type and extent of tectonic fracturing is the focus of particular attention, as is the issue of whether voids and cavities associated with karst and permafrost attenuate seismic waves generated by undesrground blasts
