Abstract

An analysis of using exposed tree roots or tree mounds as benchmarks for the estimation of erosion rates was carried out in the semi-arid Baringo District in Kenya. The biggest problem encountered in the application of this technique in tropical areas, is the difficulty of ageing the trees. Therefore, the wood structure of several species growing in the study area was examined, and a number of wood samples dendrochronologically analyzed. The possibility of using root wood for dating is discussed
