Abstract

Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the area used for small scale irrigated agriculture. This study presents an analysis of the feasibility of irrigated agriculture whithout a depletion of the natural resources in the area. The analysis involves an assessment of the quality of the potential irrigation waters and an estimation of the minimum leaching requirements to control salinity, sodicity and permeability hazards. This information and estimated crop water requirements for maize are used to estimate (net) irrigation requirements
