Abstract

A cultural-historical enigma revolves around why llamas and alpacas were never systematically milked for human use. Arguments about milk quantity, behavior of these animals, and lactose intolerance of Andean people are rejected. Eduard Hahn's notion thet the origin of cattle milking had a religious basis offers the best explanation for the failure to milk these South American camelids. Although llamas and alpacas formed offerings in Andean religion, other products besides milk had sacrificial value. - (DWG)
