Abstract

Beginning in 1884, 15 Jewish rural communities were established in the Prairie Provinces, especially Saskatchewan, under the auspices of the Jewish Colonization Association and its leader Baron Maurice de Hirsch. Yearnings for the urban life in Winnipeg and difficulties of Orthodox observance made this way of life unattractive. Departures began in the 1920s ; today none survives. - (DWG)
