Abstract

The purpose of the ventifact research is 1) to determine the geographic distribution of ventifacts within the region and to understand the causes of the distribution; 2) to map the alignment of grooves in ventifacts and to compare these trends with the present-day wind regime; and 3) to assess the aeolian history of the region by assigning absolute and relative ages to the ventifacts through an examination of surface micromorphology and by dating the rock varnish. Given a distribution of mapped grooves of known ages, it is intended that this research will enhance the understanding of changing wind flow patterns and intensity in the late Quaternary, and contribute to the broader question of climate change in the region
