Abstract

About 2 000 samples of 12 Andean food crops have been preserved since 1980 in Quito. Four crops - quinoa, amaranth, melloco, and chocho (a lumine) - have been studied intensively and improved varieties of three of them are now available. Their survival as part of Ecuadorian highland agriculture now seems assured.―(DWG)
