Abstract

Circular to elongated depressions forming a regular pattern of microrelief have been investigated on gently sloping, poorly drained grasslands in upland valleys in montane Papua New Guinea. The patterned microrelief is the result of a complex of processes involving climate, vegetation, soil properties and lithological baselevel control. The hollows are developed in peaty soils, and bottom-out on harder and less permeable layers within or at the base of the soils. The cracks initiate the micro-hollows whose expansion is facilitated by frost activity
