Continuity and conversion of house gardens in western Amazonia

Abstract

Dooryard gardens in Moyobamba, Peru, have been productive agricultural systems since the seventeenth century. Fruit trees and an understory of many other useful plants provide food, fiber, and medicinals to the houshold in what was once an isolated zone. Survival of these gardens is placed in doubt as young people lose interest in maintaining them and the space is increasingly given over to new house construction. - (DWG)
