Abstract

Examination of the concepts of « environmental stress » and « sustainable development » in the context of the central Sierra of Ecuador. Typology is presented of the various stress factors and their potential impact on the landscape and human activities. The A. asserts that clear understanding of stress problems as perceived by the rural population forms a foundation for sustainable development of the tropical Andes. - (DWG)
